Day 20 – Being Gentle On Myself

Do something that both scares and excites you. This is day 20 of my 30 day Scare The Crap Out Of Myself Video Challenge.

Today, I forgive myself for being human. You may have noticed that yesterday I didn’t post a video. I have been beating myself up for this, for breaking my routine. But here’s the deal. Yesterday, I travelling from Vancouver to Portland. I then proceeded to book my appointment at the doctor, where I as diagnosed with cellulitis, which is a very frustrating and angry infection. But these are all excuses right? Perhaps…. but today, I forgive myself for making them and let myself continue on growing.

For the next 30 days I will post one video which will describe doing something that both scares and excites me, one learning point, and a take away. Join me through my ‘Hell yeah!’ moments and my ‘Oh Sh*t’ moments for the next 30 days and please do cheer me on!

Why on earth would you do this, Mel?

For Me: To bring some structure back in my life. To prove to myself that I can follow through. To document my journey at this scary time. To feel alive.

For You: Perhaps you are on a similar journey, thinking of making a change or needing to give yourself a kick in the bum to get going. I hope that following my journey will help you feel that you are not alone and inspire you to go out and do things that scare you too. Because in the end, it is by finding and doing something that makes you come alive that we truly start to make a dent in the world. Want to scare the crap out of yourself on film? Do something that both scares and excites you. This is day 18 of my 30 day Scare The Crap Out Of Myself Video Challenge.

Today, I recap on my day without technology. Yesterday, in order to switch off and be present in the moment, I decided to switch off my technology. That means, no internet, no phone, no apps, nothing! Find out how I got on…

For the next 30 days I will post one video which will describe doing something that both scares and excites me, one learning point, and a take away. Join me through my ‘Hell yeah!’ moments and my ‘Oh Sh*t’ moments for the next 30 days and please do cheer me on!

Day 18 – Trying new and strange food…

Do something that both scares and excites you. This is day 18 of my 30 day Scare The Crap Out Of Myself Video Challenge.

Today, I try eating something new and strange…Kimshi. Sure, it’s not the biggest of challenges, not like flying to Canada and UK, but it is about celebrating those little risks that we take every day.

For the next 30 days I will post one video which will describe doing something that both scares and excites me, one learning point, and a take away. Join me through my ‘Hell yeah!’ moments and my ‘Oh Sh*t’ moments for the next 30 days and please do cheer me on!

Day 16 -From Planning To Asking

Do something that both scares and excites you. This is day 16 of my 30 day Scare The Crap Out Of Myself Video Challenge.

Today, I finally start to turn my dream of creating a Get Tech video channel into a reality.   I met an old friend today who does some incredible work around grant funding and sustainable development. After 6 months or so of talking about it, I finally got the nerve to get my first video interview. Be prepared for a lot of background noise and a shaky camera…but the key content is there!

For the next 30 days I will post one video which will describe doing something that both scares and excites me, one learning point, and a take away. Join me through my ‘Hell yeah!’ moments and my ‘Oh Sh*t’ moments for the next 30 days and please do cheer me on!

Day 15 – Chasing My Impossible

Do something that both scares and excites you. This is day 15 of my 30 day Scare The Crap Out Of Myself Video Challenge.

Today, I attempt to achieve my impossible. In just over 5 hours I get on an airplane en route to Vancouver….by myself. For years I thought I had to choose where I wanted to live. Will it be the UK, Canada or somewhere else all together? I avoided the question because saying I’d be in one place forever never felt right. Approximately one year ago I met someone who lives half the year in California, half in Cambridge. Suddenly it clicked, what if I don’t HAVE to choose?! I started researching and found lots of people who are ‘location independent’. In other words, they make a decent living and travel at the same time. It’s not a holiday, it’s work.

So…..today is me experimenting…figuring out how to make my impossible possible. It’s my first trip of this length without my husband. I’m leaving my cats behind (cheesy but they are my little family!), and my good friends too. I’m moving around a lot while I’m there (Vancouver, Portland, Vancouver, Calgary, Vancouver, Montana, Vancouver). yes, I’m excited, but last night I realised that this is all quite daunting. This is HUGE!

Deep intake of breath….here we go! Speak to you from Vancouver tomorrow!

For the next 30 days I will post one video which will describe doing something that both scares and excites me, one learning point, and a take away. Join me through my ‘Hell yeah!’ moments and my ‘Oh Sh*t’ moments for the next 30 days and please do cheer me on!

Day 14 – Saying Goodbye

Do something that both scares and excites you. This is day 14 of my 30 day Scare The Crap Out Of Myself Video Challenge.

Today I visited my English Grandma for the last time before I go on my trip to Vancouver next week. It was hard….really hard. I have some hope after today that I might see her when I get back…a little hope anyways. She is quite poorly. So here’s me ignoring my dislike of hospitals to give her a big hug and tell her I’m thinking of her.

For the next 30 days I will post one video which will describe doing something that both scares and excites me, one learning point, and a take away. Join me through my ‘Hell yeah!’ moments and my ‘Oh Sh*t’ moments for the next 30 days and please do cheer me on!

Day 13 – Enough With The Planning, On With The Doing

Do something that both scares and excites you. This is day 13 of my 30 day Scare The Crap Out Of Myself Video Challenge.

Today is all about getting out there and doing. It was a big night tonight, where me and some incredible volunteers ran a Get Tech World Cafe event, bringing people together from all backgrounds and abilities to explore mobile technology with people with disabilities and older people. I have been holding onto this idea for 2 years, talking to epople in different settings. Today, was a great pilot event that helped me conquer my fear of doing…and doing some good while I am at it!

For the next 30 days I will post one video which will describe doing something that both scares and excites me, one learning point, and a take away. Join me through my ‘Hell yeah!’ moments and my ‘Oh Sh*t’ moments for the next 30 days and please do cheer me on!

Day 12 – A Recap So Far

Do something that both scares and excites you. This is day 12 of my 30 day Scare The Crap Out Of Myself Video Challenge.

Today is a chance to look back and reflect on how the challenge is going so far. Why would I put myself through this? What are the difficult bits? The best times are when I can see that someone else is watching the videos and that they are somehow making an impact. So please do comment on here, youtube, facebook, or the social media of your choice!

For the next 30 days I will post one video which will describe doing something that both scares and excites me, one learning point, and a take away. Join me through my ‘Hell yeah!’ moments and my ‘Oh Sh*t’ moments for the next 30 days and please do cheer me on!

Day 11 – Arrgh, sales…asking for money in a cape

Do something that both scares and excites you. This is day 11 of my 30 day Scare The Crap Out Of Myself Video Challenge.

Today, I was challenged to ask for money in support of You Can Bike Too, the incredible all ability cycling project who organised CamBikeFest. I really, really dislike asking for money. I really, really, dislike sales. But, I know I need to get better at it and find a way that I feel more comfortable. Today, I did it with the help of some geeky glasses, a cape, and some bike shaped cookies.

For the next 30 days I will post one video which will describe doing something that both scares and excites me, one learning point, and a take away. Join me through my ‘Hell yeah!’ moments and my ‘Oh Sh*t’ moments for the next 30 days and please do cheer me on!
